On Thursday April 19th, UK Minister for the Overseas Territories Mr. Henry Bellingham and His Excellency the Governor, Duncan Taylor toured the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) along with HMCI Director, Mr McCleary Frederick, Deputy Chief Fire officer Rosworth McLaughlin, National Weather Service Director General Fred Sambula and staff members from the Hazard Management Office.

Mr. Frederick gave an overview of the existing Cayman Islands disaster management structure and responded to various questions from the Minister. Minister Bellingham was interested to learn about HMCI’s capacity to respond to disasters and the overall level of readiness. Mr Frederick indicated there had been significant overall improvements in the both public and private sectors in the areas of preparedness and response, but there were some limitations with the physical layout of the existing NEOC.

This was the first visit to the Cayman Islands for Henry Bellingham, the minister for the British Overseas Territories. He arrived on Wednesday, 18 April and departed on Saturday, 21 April. The visit was intended to reinforce the relationship between the Cayman Islands and the UK and foster ties between the two governments.

In a press statement issued on his arrival, Mr Bellingham said that the UK Government is proud of the achievements of the Cayman Islands. “We will continue to support you to make the most of global business opportunities; and to take very seriously our responsibilities for the security and good governance.”
