Mr. Ben Merrick, Foreign and Commonwealth Director for the Overseas Territories visited Grand Cayman on Friday, 23 November 2018.

Mr. Merrick had a full schedule which saw him meet with Premier Alden McLaughlin and key contacts across Government including representatives from Hazard Management Cayman Islands.

HMCI Director, Danielle Coleman described the meeting with Mr. Merrick as frank and productive. “The UK Government has significantly increased its disaster response support for the Overseas Territories, particularly since Hurricanes Maria and Irma in 2017, and while we were not directly impacted by those hurricanes, our level of dialogue with the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office about hazards has improved dramatically. We are actively working together on a number of initiatives to improve our disaster management capacity. An example of this is the establishment of ‘Crisis Hub’, a missing person’s crisis tracking system that was developed by the FCO. We are also exploring the benefits of an Overseas Territory Rapid Deployment Team as well as membership of the CDEMA. We believe that a good working relationship has very tangible benefits for the Cayman Islands and the other Overseas Territories.”
