Small Tremor South of Cayman Islands

The United States Geological Survey has confirmed that a 4.7 Magnitude Earthquake occurred approximately 200 Kilometers south of the Cayman Islands at 9:35 this morning. The tremor was reportedly felt in parts of Jamaica, however no felt reports have been received from residents in the Cayman Islands.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers at 18.062°N 79.670°W
The Cayman Islands is located close to a transform plate boundary line where the North American Plate slides past the Caribbean Plate. Friction builds up as the plates move past one another and occasionally this energy is released as an earthquake. Large earthquakes are rare in the Cayman Islands but they can occur.
