Tsunami Threat Message
Published 9th January 2018, 11:8pm
An Information Statement was issued regarding a possible tsunami threat for the Cayman Islands, following an EARTHQUAKE OF MAGNITUDE 7.6, 30 miles off the north coast of Honduras.
The tsunami threat for Cayman is considered very low. Cayman is listed as vulnerable to possible 1 to 3 foot tsunami waves however only a small sea level rise was registered (20 cm) at the tsunami gauge at the port in George Town - as a precaution residents should stay off beaches. Tsunamis are a series of waves, and while the threat is very small, persons should continue to exercise caution. More information will follow.
