Premier, Hon. Alden McLaughlin signed the Cayman Islands up to membership of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) at a ceremony at a RFA Mounts Bay reception tonight on Thursday, 27 June 2019.
The declaration of intent, formally introduced by Overseas Territories Minister Lord Ahmad, was witnessed by His Excellency the Governor, Mr. Martyn Roper; Deputy Governor and Head of the Civil Service, Hon. Franz Manderson; and by the Minister for Financial Services and Home Affairs, Hon. Tara Rivers.
Signed in front of a gathering including Heads of Overseas Territories, UK Parliamentarians and Cayman dignitaries, Lord Ahmad said that Caymanís CDEMA membership further strengthens the British Overseas Territoriesí resolve to work collaboratively in pooling resources, training and support capabilities in the kind of mass emergency and disaster situations, seen in the 2017 and subsequent hurricane seasons.
Lord Ahmad also acknowledged Caymanís vital role in assisting other BOTs during those challenging months and highlighted the effectiveness of RFA Mounts Bayís rapid response deployment during those times.
Visitors then watched the traditional sunset flag-lowering ceremony, following which Mr. McLaughlin was formally presented with the flag.
