National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA)
This central agency to manage all disasters is to come on stream in the near future, as the central coordinating body for all disaster management.
Hazard Management Cayman Islands (HMCI)
This is a multi-sectoral organization which has been operating since the mid-80s to address preparation and mitigation with respect to hurricanes across government and in the private sector. It has been largely successful in serving as the impetus for a high-level of preparation that resulted in protection of life and property in the face of devastating hurricanes such as Ivan in 2004.
In 2004 with the assistance of the US firm of Witt and Associates and the UNDP, the HMCI was restructured and realigned to enhance effectiveness.
Cayman Islands Government Office, London (CIGO)
CIGO provides a semi-consular service on behalf of the Cayman Islands Government in the UK and Europe, including liaison with the British Government, provision of information to the general public, assistance with immigration enquiries and support for Caymanians. During a disaster, CIGO is a major point of contact in Europe for the provision of information and guidance, particularly if communications to the Cayman Islands are affected. CIGO handles press enquiries and relations with key media contacts, as well as sharing relations with a close network of offices associated with Cayman in the UK: the Department of Tourism, the Investment Bureau, the Civil Aviation Authority and the Shipping Registry. These offices have a joint Disaster Preparedness Plan and work closely together in the UK in the event of an emergency in Cayman.
